Title
The Catcher in the Rye
Author
J.D. Salinger
Review
This book is full of controversial topics such as foul language, drugs, prostitution, homosexuality, religious questioning, etc. So, it is no wonder why it has made its way onto banned book lists. The discussion of such topics, in addition to the twist ending, make this book a great choice for offbeat book clubs.

What I appreciate most about this novel, however, is Salinger's mastery of character. He creates complete personalities, worthy of detailed study, and Holden Caulfield is one of the best.

Heart of Darkness
Author
Joseph Conrad
Review
Critics of Joseph Conrad's novella, "Heart of Darkness," have often accused it of being an out-dated and racist text, while others continue to defend it as a merely realistic account of the effects of colonialism. Finally, having read the work for myself, I find it easy to agree with each of these points of view, but I also feel that, no matter your stance on the controversy, it is difficult to dispute Conrad's ability to paint a vivid nightmare; readers are sure to feel enveloped by the environment he creates.

An interesting tid-bit I learned through reading this story is that it was the basis for Francis Ford Coppola's epic film, "Apocalypse Now."
